Dear Potential Donor,

Wayne State University’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association is proud to host its 27th annual Reach Out to Youth event on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Our theme this year is “Electrify Your Mind”. This commendable program targets students underrepresented in the fields of science and medicine, specifically those of African American, Latin American and Native American descent. Two hundred and fifty students from the Detroit Public School system between the ages of seven and eleven along with their parents have been invited to attend a day of workshops. Parent workshops are focused on various subjects including the timely and crucially important topics of a healthy lifestyle and how to motivate their children to pursue higher education, particularly in the medical arts and sciences. Students participate in interactive small group sessions focused on the associated topics of anatomy, physiology, nutrition and clinical medicine.

These workshops are designed to motivate students and lead them to careers in the medical profession, as well as educate them on the science behind healthy living. Students will also be introduced to the art of clinical medicine by learning to listen to heartbeats, measuring pulse before and after activity, isolating reflexes, and practicing administering injections to oranges. At Reach Out to Youth 2011 and 2012, students were fascinated with the “Dreaming Big Brain” there where they were introduced to structures and functions of the brain as well allowed to examine a real human brain. Adding this dimension of authenticity helps to excite the curiosity of students. In 2013 and 2014, the students were exposed to the three major energy nutrients: carbohydrates, adipose, and protein during the theme, “Eat Smart, Play Hard” by creating a lasting image and teaching students how to battle the evolution of obesity in the journey toward a healthy lifestyle. The final workshop of each year's theme brings students into a large group session for an informative and light-hearted presentation of the classic topic “Where Do Babies Come From”.

Reach Out to Youth has been an overwhelming success for more than 20 years. Medical students at Wayne State University School of Medicine look forward to participating every year and are highly involved volunteers in this program. Reach Out to Youth has graduated many excellent practicing physicians who trace their start to this program. Your help is needed to continue our tradition of educating tomorrow’s future. Attached is our proposed budget as a projection for your sponsorship. Your philanthropy will positively affect the lives of many young people and strengthen our communities for years to come. We thank you for considering this important and effective program.
